How long are we living away from the light of day? Beyond the surface of the sea in a shivering world of coral and water. Who remembers the days our ancestors build this world, far away from those others of our kind.
It´s not often that elves from up there come to us.
Most times, they stay forever. Who wouldn’t stay in this beautiful world, far away from wars, humans and the worst nightmares of our kind?
Where the fishes are swimming there is peace for all of us.
A little trouble now and then, but never those cruel battles that happened to the High Ones.
Yren loved this world with all her senses. Swimming with the current, playing with the dolphins.
She never thought about going away from here to the world up there.
And she never would.
But there was one memory--an old story told by her mother.
There were sea elves who did not find what they searched for deep in the sea.
The light-haired huntress never understood this.
Yren never understood the story of her father.
Once his name was Blinkfish. Born to a healer and a huntress and loving Recognition. There was no place he did not swim to and there was no animal he did not know.
Nobody was able to remember when it was.
One day the gifts of the sea satisfied him no longer and he swam to the surface.
His parents, his friends and all the other elves did not know where he was. Some thought that he was killed by an evil shark; others thought he had lost his way.
Neither were right.
He was sitting on a cliff for half a moon-cycle, rarely eating, and not thinking of the world behind him.
Just sitting day staring in the bright daylight.
There was something in it he never found down in the sea. The smell of woods and mountains, of deserts and jungles and of a thousand strange creatures.
It called him loudly. But he was a mer-elf, not born for the life above.
And there was another call: that of his friends and his family. This call was stronger.
When he returned to his tribe, his name was no longer Blinkfish. It was Daylight.
He was good looking, with his strong blue eyes and his light hair. Many wanted him for a lovemate, but he never chose any of them.
His thoughts were far overhead, over his tribe, over this life.
But the last decision was too hard for him.
He couldn’t leave all that he loved for such a long time for an unknown adventure.
So he tried to forget. To forget the glance of daylight, sparkling at the water surface.
One day he swam through the deep water near the dolphin pod, when he felt a warm sending.
It had no voice but called him another strange way.
Curious, he swam after it, straight to the Dolphin Pod.
There she was. More beautiful and joyful than every other elf he had seen before.
Her head was full of gold glittering curls and her dark green eyes were open and friendly.
He had never seen her before. Well, the tribe was big and for five turns he had not looked after the others.
She was joking with the dolphins, playing and laughing.
The dolphins squeaked when they saw him, thinking, there was another one coming to play.
He saw her beautiful eyes full of green. Green like he saw above and green that gave him what he searched for. Their glances met.
**Jrah?**
His soulname. She knew it. And with this thought there was a new, beautiful word that came to him.
**Bxay?**
For a long time they swam there staring in each others eyes.
Then she smiled.
**My name is Clearlake. You´re Daylight, aren´t you?**
Clearlake. Yes, he remembered that name. But there was no picture equal to that elf girl he had now Recognized.
He nodded.
No further questions. No more words. It wasn´t what both expected when they had begun this quiet normal day. But it was what their hearts wanted.
Forgetting everything around, they went into a cave, letting the dolphins play.
What followed were days and month of joy.
Daylight forgot what his soul was crying for, now where he found something to calm down his desire.
But it was not long.
When Yren was born he saw all the luck and all that the sea was for him in her little eyes.
And his old wish grew again.
Clearlake wondered why her lifemate went away so often.
One day, when he came back from above she asked him.
**Jrah, there is something in your eyes that tells me that you aren´t happy. You have a daughter and you have me. What is it that your heart calls for?**
Daylight looked in her eyes, and again he saw that green he wished to reach.
He wanted to cry but there was water all around.
It was a long time that he did not answer Clearlake´s question. He did not want to lose her.
But she was there, still waiting, and with a love he could not understand.
**I was above. There where no water is. On the place our ancestors came from. I wish I could go there.**
Clearlake was quiet. Thinking about it. Then she went away with her daughter in her arms.
When she came back Yren was no longer there.
**Show me the place where your heart is.**
They swam a long time till they reached it.
Sun sparkling welcomed them.
They sat down on a rock, looking on each other and looking on this strange world around them.
**Is that where you want to be?** Clearlake asked.
He nodded. **More than anything else.**
She smiled. ** Then you should be there.**
Clearlake was a strong healer even when Yren had nothing of this talent.
On the beach of the new world she made him to be an elf like their ancestors. His gills and fins disappeared and he was like he wanted to be.
**There is no way back, you know?** Clearlake sent with a strange shiver in her soul.
**Yes, I know. But I have to go. I wouldn´t be happy down there. I want to find out what this world is like.**
He took her face in his hands and their glances met a last time.
**I love you more than my life, Bxay. But my soul wants me to be here. Please, tell our daughter that I love her too but couldn´t be happy in this dark world without light.**
There were no tears in her eyes when he disappeared into the woods of the dry land.
But later, when he did not come back after a day and a night, she cried for her lost lifemate--but even then knew that this was the best for him.
Yren did not understand how her mother could do this. But when she asked this question, Clearlake always smiled. **It was best for all of us. When you love something so much, you have to able to let it go so that all can be happy. If you had met him you would know. He loved us both so much he never would be gone if I had not told him to go.**
There are hundreds of elves coming and going in Red Coral Holt. Most are happy.
What is this feeling that makes us want what we cannot have?
That we go to a place we do not belong?
That we have to decide between love and the soul´s freedom?
Often Yren asked herself those questions. But she never understood it.
And perhaps, there is no answer.
