A hunting party he was with went out in a mild storm, not thinking it would get much worse because of the season. They were wrong. A bad storm came upon them suddenly while they were trying to corner a giant squid. Winterwind was dashed against some sharp coral and rocks. He suffered from crushed bones and massive bleeding. The rest of the party managed to get him back to the Palace in time to save his life, but his injuries were so severe that Seaspice couldn't mend them fully. All she could do was patch him up and give him enough strength to live. He has made remarkable progress in the past few years, but he still has a ways to go before he has fully recovered.
